Common questions

How do I open my scans?

My scans are on a CD or DVD.

An iPhone or iPad cannot read a CD or DVD, even with an external drive. Use Voxelis on a Mac (insert the disc, then drag its folder onto the Voxelis window), or copy the disc onto a USB stick or into iCloud Drive on a computer, then import that folder.

The hospital sent a cloud film link.

Open the link in Safari or in the hospital's app, and look for a download of the original images (DICOM); save them to Files, then tap Import in Voxelis and pick the saved ZIP or folder. Viewing the pictures on the page is not enough. A web viewer link alone cannot be imported: Voxelis works offline and does not load web pages. If there is no download, ask the hospital for the DICOM files on a disc or USB stick.

From the next update, the app has these steps built in: How to get your scans in on the welcome screen and in Settings, and Why won't my file open? next to every import error.

The image won't open or shows an error.

Voxelis reads the DICOM transfer syntaxes modern scanners and portals use: Explicit and Implicit VR Little Endian, Explicit VR Big Endian, Deflated, RLE Lossless, JPEG Baseline, JPEG Lossless (1.2.840.10008.1.2.4.57 and .70), JPEG-LS (.80 and .81), JPEG 2000 (.90 and .91) and High-Throughput JPEG 2000 (.201–.203). From the next update, patient and study names are shown in the file's own character set, including Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Video formats (MPEG) are not supported. If a file doesn't open, the app says why; please email an anonymised sample (or the modality and transfer syntax UID from the details panel) to [email protected] and the format will be evaluated.

Is Voxelis a medical device? Can I use it for diagnosis?

No. Voxelis is for education and personal review only. It is not a medical device, not FDA-cleared, not CE-marked, and must not be used for diagnosis or clinical decisions. Every image in the app carries a "Not for diagnosis" mark. Always consult a qualified medical professional.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Voxelis makes no network requests, has no account and no tracking, and does not upload anything. See the privacy policy for details.

Can I share an image?

Yes: you can share a frame or export a series as a PDF. Every shared image and PDF page carries the "Not for diagnosis" mark. Voxelis can hide the patient's name and ID from the title and caption, but it cannot remove text burned into the image itself (common on ultrasound, screenshots and scanned documents); the app warns you before sharing such images, so check them first.

What can Voxelis do?

Scroll through slices, adjust window and level, zoom, play a series as a loop (cine), measure distance, angle and area, view multiplanar reformats of CT and MR, and view OCT scans of the eye with the fundus photo showing where each scan was taken. It is designed for learning and for looking at your own scans, not as a radiology workstation. If a feature would help you, email and say what you are trying to do.
